golden chalice vine and snails!

The golden chalice vine, which I had mistakenly called a night bloomer on this blog, always blows me away. Each flower is about 10-12 inches long and one will often find the sidewalk littered with their fallen blossoms. Naturally, one throws them in their bike basket to take home and further investigate, slice open and whatnot. After sitting on my desk for a bit, this handsome snail emerged. Hello! Seems like a lovely home, a golden chalice vine blossom. After marvelling at his grace and movements, he spent the night at the pineapple cottage with me, and it the morning, went to live in some foliage out front. Good luck!
ps this all reminds me of Joel Beverly a member of the river farm who is a biologist. He and his wife Amelia came down to key west for an impromptu visit. He specializes in bats, but oh boy, does he have a thing for snails and was more often than not seen emerging from the undergrowth with a handful of snail shells he had just uncovered. He really put them on my radar, Thanks Joel!

eatting the coconut EMBRYO with Randesh

Meet Randesh, one of the great people of the Isle. This man loves coconuts and sharing the joy of them with others. I ran into him on the street and he wanted me try the EMBRYO of a coco, not merely the mature coconut flesh we all know, but the matter inside the coco when it is sprouting a new tree, the matter which sustains its growth. It is a true delicacy, a fluffy airy substance like a cross between jello and pudding, a confection of sorts. You can see it there in the bottom photo filling the center of the sphere. Around it is a thick grey oil Randesh suggests rubbing on your skin and finally an outer layer of delicate flesh. What a treat!

dutchman's pipe, so sexy!

I asked dear Dennison at the Audbon House and Tropical Gardens in Key West, Florida what plant in the gardens should not be missed. He took me to a back fence covered in the Dutchman's Pipe. Oh my! What a sexy plant. Please note the heart shaped leaves, the closed flower which appears so male, and the open flower which just screams, "woman!".  All this to attract the pollinator which I have been told is a butterfly. The wee seed of this plant is also in the shape of a heart. I heart it so much. xoxo
